New Year’s Costume Ideas for Dogs and Cats

The final week of 2022 is here, and that means New Year’s parties! As we start celebrate the start of a new year, you may want to include your pet in the festivities. One fun way to do that is to put them in a costume. If you’re the type to put cute outfits on your pet, keep reading! We’re going to be talking about New Year’s costume ideas for dogs and cats.

Firework

Possibly the most recognizable symbol of U.S. New Year’s celebrations is fireworks. There’s nothing like ringing in a new year with the beautiful lights and colors of a fireworks display. Unfortunately, it’d be a little hard to dress your pet as a detonated firework. You can, however, put them in a firework rocket costume! As long as they have striped fabric around their body and a backward cone shape either near their head or their tail, you’ll be able to get the point across. Alternatively, buy a plush firework and strap that to your dog’s or cat’s back.

Bottle of champagne

The popping of champagne bottles is another classic New Year’s tradition. Similar to the firework idea, you may need to DIY the costume yourself if you want your pet to dress as a champagne bottle. To keep it simple, you can also get a plush champagne bottle toy and attach that to your pet. Either way, that’ll allow your pet to at least feel a little included in drinking the night away with everyone else at the party.

Father Time

Although not as well-known, Father Time has connections to New Years and may be the perfect costume idea for your pet! Depictions of Father Time vary, but it’s generally agreed that he’s an old man with robes and a beard. Common accessories include a scythe, a clock, or an hourglass. Basically, all your pet needs to be the harbinger of changing times is a fake beard and a pocket watch! You could also dress it up with long robes or a toy scythe. As long as your pet still has full mobility, this idea has a lot of creative potential.

New Year’s glasses or hat

Didn’t have time to get a costume in advance? Don’t worry! At any New Year’s party, there’s likely to be either glasses or hats with the new year’s number on it. Your pet might not keep the glasses on for long, since those glasses are usually in uncomfortable shapes. But you should be able to get at least a few photos before they knock the accessory off of their face! The party hat would be easier to wear because it has the elastic strap to go under their chin and doesn’t block their vision. Just consider buying small kid sized party hats to fit your pet’s head size.

New Years is a time for celebration and new beginnings. As pet owners, this is a good time to remind ourselves to dedicate more time and energy to our pets. While writing up your New Year’s resolutions, consider adding things that include your pet. Maybe you could take your dog on more walks or spend more time playing with your cat.
