5 Ways to Get Fit With Your Dog

New year, new resolutions! That means an increase in motivation to get into shape. If you want to include your pet in your workout routine, check out these 5 ways to get fit with your dog!

 

Walking

The most obvious choice is the classic walk. To make it more challenging, you can make it a jog or a run. While it may seem too simple, there are so many benefits to daily walks for your dog, and you get to get fit too. This is also the most accessible option. As long as there’s a road or sidewalk nearby, you can easily do this every day!

 

Hiking

To make things a little more challenging, try hiking! This method has similar benefits to walking or running, but it’s less monotonous. Start with an easy trail (even terrain, well-marked paths, low inclines). As your fitness improves, try finding new and harder trails. Each new place you go is a new place for you and your dog to explore, offering an exciting change of scenery. Remember to wear comfy clothes (and harnesses) and bring lots of water!

 

Swimming

Another fun option is to try taking your dog swimming with you! Similar to hiking, there’s lots of different places you can try. The added resistance of the water will also help improve your strength faster. Even paddling around for 30 minutes is a real workout! If you choose this way to get fit, though, make sure to take the necessary precautions. Avoid going after heavy rain when water levels rise and currents speed up. If you’re looking for something a little more interactive, try playing sports with your dog! Sports like frisbee or soccer might be the perfect way to get active and have fun. This is another one of the ways to get fit with your dog that you can do in your backyard, making it super accessible. There’s also plenty of options, so give them all a try and see which sports you and your dog enjoy the most!

 

Playing

Related to sports, the simple act of playing with your dog counts as exercise. A single game of fetch can burn plenty of calories. A game of tug of war will get you moving and active for sure. Racing your dog around the house or your yard is a fun competitive way to get that cardio in! Any form of motion is better than sitting still. If you struggle to get out of the house or move around a lot, playing some games with your dog is a simple way to get some activity in, even from the comfort of your own home. It doesn’t always require a lot of space, and it’s easy to fit it into your schedule.

 

Both humans and animals benefit from an active lifestyle. It can be hard to increase activity levels at first, but involving your pet may help keep up motivation.
