Summer Treats For Your Dog
- by cpc_admin
If you still have some extra time on your hands due to COVID-19/Coronavirus, why not make a healthy treat for your pets? We have included some great recipes for you that are simple yet tasty! This is even a great idea if you are looking for activities to keep your kids occupied. One recipe is for a frozen treat, the other one is baked. Both options are a healthy alternative to store bought treats, and you will know exactly what is in them.
Our first treat will be a frozen peanut butter and banana treat. This one takes only about 5-10 minutes to prep, but will need about two hours to freeze. Its three ingredients make it simple and quick, but with plenty of flavor. You’ll need 1 banana, 4 tbsp of peanut butter, and 12 ounces of plain or vanilla yogurt. Please check the ingredients on your peanut butter to ensure there is nothing toxic to your dog. Some peanut butters contain Xylitol and other ingredients that can be deadly. Once you make sure your ingredients are safe, you’ll mix them all together and blend.
You can blend by hand, with a handheld mixer, or a stand mixer. Once blended well, you can scoop them onto wax paper or a mold if you have it. Just make sure whatever you use is non-stick – I tried a mini muffin tin and they stuck when they froze! Once you have them scooped out, just set them in the freezer! After two hours they should be frozen and ready to eat. We store ours in a Ziploc bag in the freezer and they stay fresh up to three weeks. One of our dogs took a little bit to try theirs, but they weren’t used to frozen treats. Once they figured out how to eat it, they love them!
This next treat is a little more of a time commitment, but is a great activity for kids to participate in as well! These treats only need two ingredients: 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 2 jars of pureed baby food (4oz jars). We have used several different flavors and our dogs have loved each of them. There are meat flavors, sweet potato, and fruit options.
Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees, and then mix your ingredients together in a medium bowl until it forms a soft dough. If the dough seems too stiff you can add a few tablespoons of water and if it is too sticky, feel free to add more flour. Once the dough is mixed, roll it out on a floured surface and use cookie cutters or knife to cut it into shapes or squares. Place on a baking sheet (I use parchment paper to prevent sticking) and bake for 20-25 minutes. These only stay fresh for a few days, and maybe up to a week if you refrigerate them. But they are a tasty treat your pup is sure to enjoy!
