- by cpc_admin
January is National Train Your Dog Month, so your friends at Courtney’s Pet Care Professionals wanted to share some awesome dog training tips with our readers!
Grab some treats and head to a quiet room of your home and with a little practice, your pup will be showing off their tricks in no time!
Trick #1 “Watch Me” – For this trick, your dog will need to know how to sit already. This trick is great for getting their attention and can help with recall or when you need to redirect their behavior. Have them sit, then hold a treat in front of your face, kind of between your eyebrows. Give them the command, “Watch me”, then reward them for holding eye contact with you.
Trick #2 “Roll Over” – If your dog doesn’t already know how to lay down, they will need to learn that first. But once they have learned to “lay down”, you can work on teaching them to “roll over”. For teaching this trick, have your pup lay down and then hold the treat in front of their nose and move it up over their head to the other side of their nose in a circular motion. This trick might be a little difficult for your pup to understand, so make sure to praise them and reward them when they complete it.
Trick #3 “Paw!” – With your dog already sitting, give the command “Paw!” or “High Five!” and gently lift your dog’s paw. Reward with a treat. While teaching your dog this trick, make sure they sit and re-compose themselves after each try.
The key when teaching your dog new tricks is to be consistent. Practicing for even just 10-20 minutes each day will help your dog learn this faster and they will retain the information. Feel free to send photos or videos of your dogs learning these new tricks, we would love to see them!
